Michael commenced in the Life Insurance industry in 1986 as an agent with Legal and General, with whom he undertook extensive industry training, as well as with the former Life Underwriter’s Association of Australia. In 1989, he qualified as a member of the Australian Society of Investment and Financial Advisers Ltd (ASIFA) with further study in Financial Planning. He studied for the Diploma of Life Insurance, conducted by Deakin University and also completed his Diploma of Financial Services in 2003, the same year he gained his Australian Financial Services Licence, which is held by his operating entity, Murphy Financial Solutions Pty Ltd. Michael continues to enhance his knowledge and skills with ongoing training in his field of expertise. Michaael is now consulting to the firm he established to ensure clients are continued to be serviced and advised in the manner that they have come to expect.
Michael a past National President of the Association of Financial Advisers; in his previous capacity of Vice President, he served as Chairman of the Public Affairs Committee from 1999 to 2006, making representations to the Parliamentary Joint Standing Committee on Financial Services Reform on behalf of Advisers in the lead up to the implementation of the Financial Services Reform Act (FSRA).He has been Director of the SA Branch and has been reappointed Chairman of the Public Affairs Committee.
As an officer bearer of the Association of Financial Advisers of Australia, Michael was the Australian delegate to the Asia-Pacific Financial Services Association and was invited to join their Management Board in 2004. In this capacity, he was involved in negotiating an International Standard for Financial Planning, and was the signatory on behalf of the Asia-Pacific Financial Services Association’s registering the International Federation of Financial Standards (Rotterdam), established in conjunction with the European Financial Planning Association, setting international standards for the Financial Services Industry.
Michael is also a Top of the Table qualifying member for MDRT, which is considered to be the premier sales-based financial services organisation in the world.
Michael has presented papers at a number of industry conferences, both locally and nationally, and has been published in The Advertiser, Financial Review, Money Management and the Independent Financial Adviser. As with syndicated publicity, he has also been quoted in The Age and Sydney Morning Herald.
Michael has been happily married to Charlotte for over for 30 years and has six children - five daughters (including twins) and one son. He was a keen footballer and water skier and enjoys spending his spare time at his holiday home on the Murray River.
